Before character,
there was a pearl.

Natural baroque forms, shifting luster, color and irregularity — the starting point of every Pearlolo piece.

Ideas live here
before they
become anything.

Sketches, revisions, abandoned studies and small decisions that happen before a piece ever reaches the wall.

Not everything
makes the cut.

Some ideas are reshaped. Some are rebuilt. Some never leave the table. These are a few of them.

Things that taught
us something.

Practice pieces, broken attempts, unused components, materials and small mistakes that rarely make it into the finished photographs.

Pearlolo hat form practice pieces
001

Hat Training

Form Study / Practice
Before color, flowers or tiny details appear, the basic hat form has to feel right. These white studies are where proportion, curve and structure are practiced first.

002

Which Flower Is Better?

Detail Study / Repetition
A flower can be tiny and still change the character of an entire piece. Petal shape, depth and spacing are tested again and again before one version stays.

003

Burger Training

Food Study / Layer Construction
The burger is built one layer at a time. Even surfaces that disappear once the layers are stacked are shaped and colored, simply so the final form still feels believable when everything comes together.

The Red Palette

Studio Material / Color
Not every archive object is beautiful. Some are simply tools that quietly stay on the table while everything else takes shape.

005

Broken During Inlay

Process Accident / Inlay Study
Sometimes a piece does not survive the process. Cutting and working directly into a natural pearl always carries a small amount of risk. This one broke before it could become anything else.
Pearlolo rejected components and unused metal parts
006

Rejected Components

Selection Study / Unused Parts
Finished does not always mean usable. Some components are set aside because the proportion, surface or final character simply does not feel right.
Small collection of Pearlolo button studies
007

Small Button Studies

Button Series / Small Forms
Small scale does not mean simple. Each tiny surface still has to carry enough color, carving and character to stand on its own.
008

The Strawberry That Was Wrong

Finished Study / Rejected After Review
This one had already been finished when the problem finally became obvious.
Studio Note / Discovered Later

We thought this one was finished.

Then we noticed the seeds. On a real strawberry, the seeds sit inside tiny depressions in the surface. In this version, ours were raised outward instead. The hat was already complete, but the structure was wrong — so it stayed in the studio.
